The largest IDE hard drive I ever saw on the market was 1 TB, and those were really uncommon. 750 GB was the last size made in much of a sizable quantity. I have heard of some compatibility issues with the SATA Network Adapters, being that they are unofficial, and that they have no network port. Using a SATA-to-IDE adapter is a pain, because there is no empty space in the drive bay if you use a 3.5' drive for the adapter to fit. You have to use a 2.5' drive, which will shift if the console moves, or you have to cut apart your Network Adapter to make room. The PC market switched to SATA being the standard on-board drive connector instead of IDE around 2005-2006.

PS2 came out in 2000, when SATA wasn't a common thing yet, so they designed it to use IDE. That means, looking for a hard drive now, you are looking for a technology that was phased out almost 10 years ago.
